The cutting method used to obtain quartersawn and riftsawn wood allows the medullary rays of boards to be displayed rather than the more commonly seen plainsawn effect. While this cutting method entails more time and waste than other methods, it is desirable for the appealing, distinctive pattern, and nearly knot-free material it yields.
