Chinese and Asian imports are flooding the market with low cost inferior goods.
This has caused a tremendous drain on the American Economy especially in the south, which was for years known as the Furniture Center of the United States. (It could now best be called the furniture warehouse of the United States.)
Thousands of workers have lost their Jobs due to these imports.
Look closely at wooden imported goods from Asia. Especially look at the joints where two pieces of wood join together. You will see where the finish is separating due to the expansion of the wood product and even more noticeable in solid wood. Why is this?
Wood expands and contracts with humidity and temperature changes. Can you imagine the many changes when a container of furniture is produced in Asia with that humidity, then loaded in a container. The container sets on top or in the cargo hole of a huge container ship for 4 to six weeks, in hot sun, and extreme humidity. I have been in the furniture industry all my life and it is only common sense that this furniture is expanding and contracting constantly in these containers. Many warehouses at our U.S. furniture factories have humidity-controlled warehouses for this very reason.
There is a huge problem with the furniture arriving from Asian Manufactures with consistency. One order produced 30 days ago may have a entirely different look to the finish. In fabric we have called this Dye lot for years. I have seen warehouses full of furniture from Asia where it looks like 3 different finishes in one collection.
Another problem---Here in the US we have strict governmental regulations about wood finishes and their chemical makeup. Asian companies do not have these same regulations, that’s exactly why the environment in these manufacturing areas is so polluted. Do we really know what affect these finishes will have on our homes and families when they age with time?
